A LITTLE ABOUT ME AND HOW I LOST MY HEARING:

When I was 18 months old, I became profoundly deaf due to an illness (Meningitis) and I did not let it stop me from chasing after my dreams. My supportive parents always encouraged me to do both speak and sign, which was a big challenge growing up. But, I get to experience both worlds and I am very thankful. I received my 2nd cochlear implant back in 2002 and it changed my life. Hearing new sounds that I never heard before was so exciting and overwhelming at the same time. Birds, crickets, air conditioning, and paper wrinkling were the high pitch sounds I did not experience with hearing aids. I am able to hear my girls speak and sing, which they love to do all the time 🙂

I graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 2005 with a BFA in Visual Communications (Graphic Design) and Minors in Art History and Photography. 3 days after graduating OU, I started my first job at a publisher as book graphic designer and worked there for 8 years, until I was able to stay home to raise my little ones. Now, they are in school full-time and I decided to pursue my true passion with teaching.

Photography is another passion of mine and I am a real estate photographer and do drone photography as well! Also, I do family, seniors, newborns, and event photography on the side.

One of my greatest achievements is when I was Miss Deaf Oklahoma in 2004-2005. I got to meet so many wonderful people and children. I loved making a great impact and being a role model. I want to continue doing that today with my Sign Language Club. You might be looking to learn sign language for fun or want to learn how to communicate with the deaf people. Also, you might have a loved one or friend who has hearing loss and you want to be involved. I would love to help you with that!
